Rebecca is one of my favourite books. After I read "Jamaica Inn", I wanted to read Du Maurier's other books and I'm happy my first choice was Rebecca.
It is an ordinary book at first. It starts with a dream that the narrator had about a mansion called "Manderley".

"Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.."

In first few chapter she introduced her self to us and how she became the mistress in "Manderley" and how she became Mrs. De Winter. She looks like a weak character who is threatened by Mr. De Winter's deceased wife, "Rebecca".
Slowly the story gets the control of you. It starts to grow on you. Little by little you start to feel, like you are the narrator of the story. She doesn't have a first name, Du Maurier doesn't give us a first name. In a way that's good, because it helps the reader to go into the narrator's head.
When I was reading that book, I went through the dark passages of Manderley, I peeped into the rooms in the west wing, where I am not suppose to go. I saw Rebecca's belongings and I felt alone when I thought Max De Winter is still in love with his deceased wife. I felt worthless comparing to Rebecca. She was gone, but was still here.
Then, the story changes. Max revealed a darkest secret in his life to her. She starts to grow as a character after that. She gets stronger and stronger day by day. She grows faithfully. She stand by her husband's side in every step of the story.
"Rebecca" is one of the best mystery novels I've ever read. It has every aspect of a good mystery. It is a page turner.

Sally Beauman says "Rebecca is the haunting story of a young girl consumed by love and the struggle to find her identity.."
